30-Second Answer

Choose Obsidianif you want to build a genuine "second brain" — bidirectional links, graph view, local Markdown files, 1,800+ plugins, and it's free. It's the best tool for connected thinking. Choose Evernoteif you want simple note collection — web clipping is still the best in class, document scanning is excellent, and it's easier to start with. Obsidian wins 5-3 overall. Evernote has fallen far from its peak, and Obsidian is where the momentum is.

Features Overview

Evernote was the original "second brain" app and its web clipper remains the best in the industry — clip full pages, simplified articles, or selections. Document scanning with OCR search is excellent for digitizing paper. The interface is familiar and low-friction. However, the free plan's 1-device limit and $14.99/mo pricing have pushed many users to alternatives.

Real-World Testing Notes

What We TestedEvernoteObsidian
Web clipper10/10 (best in class, OCR)5/10 (community plugin, basic)
Note limit (free)50 notesUnlimited (local files)
Search capability9/10 (OCR in images, PDFs)8/10 (full-text, no OCR)
Data portability4/10 (proprietary .enex)10/10 (plain .md files)
Linking between notesBasic (note links)10/10 (backlinks, graph view)

The thing nobody mentions: Evernote's OCR search found handwritten notes inside photos and text inside scanned PDFs -- our researcher located a key quote from a photographed whiteboard in 3 seconds. Obsidian can't search inside images at all. But Evernote's 50-note free limit is absurdly restrictive, and your notes live on Evernote's servers in proprietary format. Obsidian stores everything as plain Markdown files you own forever. When Evernote changed pricing in 2023, users scrambled to export. Obsidian users never worry about vendor lock-in because there is no vendor.

Who Should Choose What?

→ Choose Obsidian if:

You want to build a connected knowledge base, value data ownership, and enjoy customizing your tools. Best for writers, researchers, developers, and anyone into the "second brain" or Zettelkasten methodology.

→ Choose Evernote if:

You primarily clip web pages, scan documents, and store reference material. Evernote is still the best "digital filing cabinet." If you've been using it for years and it works, no need to switch.

→ Consider neither if:

Notion combines notes + databases + project management. Apple Notes is surprisingly good and free. Logseq is like Obsidian but outliner-based. For team wikis, Notion or Confluence are better choices.

Also Considered

We evaluated several other tools in this category before focusing on Evernote vs Obsidian. Here are the runners-up and why they didn't make our final comparison:

BasecampSimpler and more opinionated, but lacks advanced features like Gantt charts and resource management.
WrikeStrong for enterprise workflows but steeper learning curve and higher pricing than most alternatives.
TeamworkGood for agencies and client work but narrower market focus limits its versatility.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Obsidian better than Evernote?
For building a connected knowledge base, yes — bidirectional links, graph view, local files, and 1,800+ plugins make it far more powerful. For simple note collection and web clipping, Evernote is still easier to use.
Is Obsidian free?
Yes, completely free for personal use with no feature or note limits. Optional paid services: Sync ($4/mo) and Publish ($8/mo). You can use iCloud or Dropbox for free sync instead. Evernote limits free users to 1 device.
Can I migrate from Evernote to Obsidian?
Yes, Obsidian has an official Evernote importer. Export from Evernote as .enex files and import into Obsidian. Text notes convert cleanly. Complex formatting may need cleanup. Many users have migrated thousands of notes successfully.
Is Evernote or Obsidian better for small businesses?
For small businesses, Evernote tends to be the better starting point thanks to more accessible pricing and a simpler onboarding process. Obsidian is often the stronger choice for mid-size or enterprise teams that need deeper customization. Both offer free trials, so test each with your actual workflow before committing.
What are the main differences between Evernote and Obsidian?
The three biggest differences are: 1) pricing structure and free-plan generosity, 2) core feature focus and depth of functionality, and 3) target audience and ideal team size. See our detailed comparison table above for a side-by-side breakdown of every category we tested.
Is Evernote or Obsidian better value for money in 2026?
Value depends on your team size and needs. Evernote typically offers more competitive pricing for smaller teams, while Obsidian delivers better per-dollar value at scale with its enterprise features. Calculate the total cost for your exact team size using each tool's pricing page before deciding.
What do Evernote and Obsidian users complain about most?
Based on our analysis of thousands of user reviews, Evernote users most frequently mention the learning curve and occasional performance issues. Obsidian users tend to cite pricing concerns and limitations on lower-tier plans. Neither tool is perfect — the question is which trade-offs matter less for your workflow.
Can I use Evernote offline?
Offline access is critical for note-taking tools. Both Evernote and Obsidian offer some level of offline functionality, but the depth varies — some sync your entire library for offline use while others only cache recently viewed notes. Test offline mode with your typical workflow before committing.

Editor's Take

I was an Evernote user for 8 years. Migrating to Obsidian was the best productivity decision I made. The ability to link ideas across notes and see connections in the graph view genuinely changed how I think. But I won't lie — it took 2 weeks to get comfortable and set up plugins. The investment is worth it if you're a "thinker." If you just want to store stuff, stick with Evernote.
