Hands-On Findings (April 2026)
I rebuilt the same internal refund-approval tool in both Retool and self-hosted Appsmith 1.49 in March — same Postgres, same Stripe webhook flow, same role-based approval queue. Retool finished in 4.5 hours; Appsmith took 9 hours mostly because its custom widget for our barcode scanner needed a 60-line wrapper that Retool ships as a built-in. What we got wrong in our last review
- We said Appsmith's component library was "half of Retool's." Closer to 75% as of v1.49 — the Statbox and Multi-step form widgets closed real gaps.
- We claimed Retool's mobile builder was "production-ready." After shipping a delivery driver app, layout breaks under iOS 17.4 forced us back to a responsive web view.
Edge case that broke Appsmith
A query that returned 47,000 rows for a CSV export froze the editor tab and crashed the worker container after 90 seconds. Workaround: add LIMIT 5000 in the query, then use Appsmith's utils.downloadFile chunked with a server-side cursor. Retool streams large result sets natively up to 1M rows. We've since capped Appsmith query result size at 10k in the appsmithctl config.
