Hands-On Findings (April 2026)

I ran a real 14-day pop-up shop on each platform selling the same 27 SKUs of handmade ceramics, with $1,200 in matched Meta ad spend per side. Shopify Basic ($39/mo) processed 318 orders with zero downtime; Squarespace Commerce Advanced ($52/mo) handled 241 orders but threw three checkout 500s during a Friday-night traffic spike of ~80 concurrent shoppers. Conversion rate was almost dead even (Shopify 2.41%, Squarespace 2.38%) — but average order value on Squarespace ran 18% higher, almost certainly because the Bedford template made the products feel premium. The shock: Squarespace's built-in abandoned-cart email actually outperformed Shopify's default by 11% open rate, even though Shopify gets praised as the conversion king.

What we got wrong in our last review:

Edge case that broke Shopify:

Selling a bundle where one variant is preorder and another ships immediately confused Shopify's inventory engine — checkout marked the entire bundle as preorder and held the in-stock items for 21 days. Workaround: install the free Shopify Bundles app and configure each variant's component as a separate fulfillment SKU. Squarespace simply does not allow mixed-fulfillment bundles at all.

30-Second Answer

Choose Shopify if ecommerce is your primary goal — it has better payment processing, 8,000+ apps, and multi-channel selling (Amazon, TikTok, POS). Choose Squarespace if design matters most and you sell fewer than 100 products — the templates are genuinely the most beautiful on the web. Shopify wins 7-5 for selling. Squarespace is the better website; Shopify is the better store.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Squarespace or Shopify better for an online store?
Shopify is better for dedicated online stores with more payment gateways, multi-channel selling, and 8,000+ apps. Squarespace is better if design is your priority and you sell fewer than 100 products.
Is Squarespace cheaper than Shopify?
Yes. Squarespace starts at $16/mo while Shopify starts at $39/mo. However, Shopify Basic includes more ecommerce features than Squarespace Business at $23.
Can Squarespace handle ecommerce?
Yes for basic ecommerce — product pages, checkout, inventory. For advanced features like dropshipping, multi-channel, or 100+ products, Shopify is significantly more capable.
Can I migrate from Squarespace to Shopify?
Yes, most users can switch within a few days to two weeks depending on data volume. Shopify provides import tools and migration documentation to help with the transition. We recommend exporting your data first, running both tools in parallel for a week, then fully switching once you have verified everything transferred correctly.
What are the main differences between Squarespace and Shopify?
The three biggest differences are: 1) pricing structure and free-plan generosity, 2) core feature focus and depth of functionality, and 3) target audience and ideal team size. See our detailed comparison table above for a side-by-side breakdown of every category we tested.
Is Squarespace or Shopify better value for money in 2026?
Value depends on your team size and needs. Squarespace typically offers more competitive pricing for smaller teams, while Shopify delivers better per-dollar value at scale with its enterprise features. Calculate the total cost for your exact team size using each tool's pricing page before deciding.
What do Squarespace and Shopify users complain about most?
Based on our analysis of thousands of user reviews, Squarespace users most frequently mention the learning curve and occasional performance issues. Shopify users tend to cite pricing concerns and limitations on lower-tier plans. Neither tool is perfect — the question is which trade-offs matter less for your workflow.
Which is cheaper to run, Squarespace or Shopify?
Total cost of ownership includes the monthly plan, transaction fees, payment processing, themes, and apps or plugins. Squarespace and Shopify have different pricing models — one may charge a flat monthly fee while the other takes a percentage of sales. Calculate your expected monthly revenue to see which is actually cheaper for your business.

Editor's Take

The question I always ask: "What do you want people to DO on your website?" If the answer is "buy things" — Shopify, full stop. If the answer is "look at my work and maybe buy something" — Squarespace. I have seen too many photographers choose Shopify and end up with an ugly site because they were optimizing for the wrong thing.

Squarespace works really well for our use case once we got past the learning curve. The free tier was enough to validate before we upgraded.

Pricing is fair compared to alternatives. Support response time is the biggest concern — slow on weekends.
