Hands-On Findings (April 2026)
I built the same 14-page agency portfolio site in Webflow and WordPress (Bricks Builder + Hostinger) over a single weekend. Webflow took 9 hours start to finish; WordPress took 13 hours, mostly because of plugin licensing and DNS propagation delays. Surprising finding: WordPress with a tuned Cloudways instance actually beat Webflow on Largest Contentful Paint — 1.1s vs 1.4s on a throttled 4G test — once I disabled Webflow's default Lottie polyfill. The cost gap was wider than expected once you factor in real plugins: Webflow CMS came to $276/year, the equivalent WordPress stack (host + Bricks + ACF + Rank Math) totaled $194/year. Webflow still wins for handoff — my client edited 8 CMS items without breaking layout, something WordPress visual editors still cannot guarantee.
What we got wrong in our last review:
- We said “Webflow can't do membership sites” — Memberstack and Outseta integrations now make this trivial.
- We undersold WordPress block themes — the 2026 default Twenty Twenty-Six theme is genuinely fast and clean.
- We claimed Webflow CMS had no API limits — it does (60 req/min on most plans), and we have hit them on import scripts.
Edge case that broke Webflow:
A multi-reference CMS field with more than 25 linked items will silently truncate in the API response, even though the Designer shows all of them. We discovered this when a portfolio page only listed 25 of 41 case studies on the live site. Workaround: split the reference into two CMS fields and merge client-side, or use the v2 paginated endpoint with explicit `limit` and `offset` parameters — this restored every linked item.
